The Northeast Ohio Hospital Opioid Consortium

Each day the heroin and opioid crisis continues to decimate communities across the United States, including those in Northeast Ohio. As the crisis reaches an all-time high, hospitals, law enforcement agencies and mental health providers have continued to grapple with ways to effectively address the crisis.

ABOUT THE NORTHEAST OHIO HOSPITAL OPIOID CONSORTIUM

The Northeast Ohio Hospital Opioid Consortium works collaboratively to address the region’s opioid epidemic. The principal goal of the Opioid Consortium is to serve as a model hospital system-based and physician-led consortium that significantly reduces the impact of the opioid epidemic in Northeast Ohio by:

  • Sharing and implementing evidence-based practices.
  • Promoting policy changes.
  • Increasing prevention efforts.

WHAT WE DO

Housed at The Center for Health Affairs, the Northeast Ohio Hospital Opioid Consortium aims to mitigate the opioid crisis through the Opioid Consortium strategic plan, which includes:

  • Education of hospital employees across the healthcare continuum.
  • Use of medication-assisted treatment (MAT).
  • Expanded distribution and use of Naloxone.

STRUCTURE

The Opioid Consortium structure includes its member partners - The Center for Health Affairs, Cleveland Clinic, MetroHealth, Northeast Ohio VA Healthcare System, St. Vincent’s Charity Medical Center and University Hospitals - as well as several support teams and committees. Its internal team receives input principally from hospital members, but governmental agencies and community-based organizations also help to illuminate the problem and identify solutions.
