When you think of great communicators, which names come to mind first? Is it someone famous, such as Martin Luther King, Jr., Ronald Reagan or Oprah? Maybe it’s a colleague who always seems to say the right thing at the right moment or a relative who understands when to give advice and when to listen. 

In a healthcare setting, the importance of effective communication is paramount. Almost every single interaction in a healthcare setting is reliant on effective communication. From initially scheduling an appointment when a health issue arises to understanding discharge instructions upon leaving the hospital, the role that communication plays in providing a high-quality patient experience cannot be overstated. This month’s policy snapshot, Patient Experience: Spotlight on Communication Skills, examines how healthcare providers are enhancing and strengthening the ways in which they communicate with patients.
